Overview

[Ru3O(CH3COO)6(4-pic)2(NO)]PF6 is a triruthenium nitrosyl cluster that acts as a photoactive pro-drug for the delivery of nitric oxide (NO). The complex consists of a triruthenium core coordinated by six acetate ligands, two 4-picoline (4-methylpyridine) ligands, and a nitrosyl group, with a hexafluorophosphate counterion. It is designed to release NO upon irradiation with visible light (e.g., λ = 532 nm) or through redox-mediated reactions in the cellular environment. In preclinical in vitro studies, the compound has demonstrated significant tumoricidal activity against B16F10 melanoma cells, reducing cell viability by up to 90% upon irradiation. The cytotoxicity is primarily attributed to the release of nitric oxide, which acts as the active species to induce cell death.
